Following OpenAI’s launch of GPT-6 Sol and Luna, Head of Solutions Engineering, Matt Weaver, tells AI Magazine how they give businesses greater flexibility

OpenAI recently introduced GPT-6 Astra, which the company calls the “most intelligent and aligned model in the world”. The AI lab has since announced it is introducing GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna, which are lower-cost models that were trained with similar methods to GPT-6 Astra, its most advanced model.

AI firms are increasingly competing on cost following concerns about Chinese open-weight models, which threaten to nab enterprise customers who are growing concerned about rising token usage costs.

According to the benchmarking data firm Artificial Analysis, GPT-6 Sol and Luna are “pushing the cost efficiency frontier” by halving cost relative to GPT-5.6 Sol and Luna.

Matt Weaver, Head of Solutions Engineering at OpenAI, told AI Magazine: “With GPT-6 Sol and Luna, we’re giving businesses more flexibility to match the model to the work.”

Matching models to workflows

OpenAI says its GPT-6 models lead across the cost-intelligence curve, combining exceptional capabilities at every tier with infrastructure that delivers them efficiently at scale.

The firm says that improvements in caching and inference let it serve these models at lower cost, and it is passing those savings directly on to users and customers by reducing API prices for Sol and Luna by 50% compared with their GPT-5.6 promotional pricing.

Explaining how the different AI models available each serve a different purpose, Matt adds: “GPT-6 Astra is for the most demanding projects, where maximum capability matters.

Matt explains: “GPT-6 Sol is designed for difficult professional work – from complex business workflows to coding – while GPT-6 Luna offers a more efficient option for high-volume, clearly defined tasks like summarising documents or extracting information.

“Sol and Luna bring Astra’s advances in professional work, factuality, coding and computer use to faster, more affordable models. As AI moves from experimentation into how businesses operate, having the right model for each type of work matters.

“Our goal is to make advanced AI practical across organisations – helping people move faster, make better decisions and spend more time on higher-value work.”
